Phat Jack's BBQ

Those that know me know I love barbeque. KC style, Carolina style (both North and South), Texas dry, and every combination you can think of.

I was excited to learn of Phat Jack's opening at 40th and Cornhusker Hwy. They tout themselves as "award winning Kansas City style Competitive BBQ".

Boy was I disappointed. And let me tell you, if you've been to B.B's Lawnside and/or Arthur Bryant's, you know what good barbeque should be.

There is some good potential though. The meat and seasoning were good. The "regular" sauce was good. The beans were very good.

Now the bad. I paid $8.99 for one thick slice of white bread and about 8 ounces of meat. The menu said I'd be getting "burnt ends" which are one of my favorites. The meat showed no sign of ever being burnt. Nor did it exhibit any taste of being burnt. Having smoked my own fair share of meat, I know what crusty burnt ends should be like.

My burnt ends came with NO sides. So I ordered a small side of beans for $1.99. I received essentially a kiddie Dixie cup for a serving. Sheesh, I'm gonna starve!

Now I realize that Phat Jack's is just getting started. But if you're gonna serve barbeque in this town, you better give people a decent portion for a decent price. You will not have repeat business just because it tastes good.

I know the time and dedication it takes to smoke a hunk of meat. But better luck next time, to someone else who goes there. I won't be back.

Arthur Bryants is my favorite!

I hope Phat Jack's works it out but it's a long shot in Lincoln. You've got to have very good food and good prices. It's difficult to have both.

THIS PLACE IS A JOKE.IF THIS GUY RAN HIS PLUMMING BUSINESS THE WAY HE COOKS AND SERVES THE PUBLIC I CAN SEE WHY HE'S NOT A PLUMMER ANY MORE. IF HE WON AWARDS FOR THIS BBQ HE MUST OF BEEN THE ONLY ENTRY AND FAMILY JUDGING HIM. PRICES TO HIGH FOR WHAT YOU GET.I WISH HIM LUCK BUT I WOUNDN'T GIVE UP THE PLUMMING BUSINESS JUST YET.

Word on the street is that this character learned everything he knew about bbq from some guy down in Kansas while hopping from one plumbing company/job to another screwing up enough until he finally had to run (or got run) out of town.

Supposedly the guy who showed him the bbq ropes (don't know who that is or if this is true or not) has done pretty well on the bbq circuit in the past and that's what this character is leaching off of to start a restaurant hoping folks here in Lincoln don't know any better...but good luck cause I'm pretty sure your gonna need it!

I read the blogs on here about Phat Jacks earlier this week and decided to try it out. We loved it, and my husband and I are big BBQ fans. I can see why he has so many trophies up in his restraunt. Excellent food!!! After reading the personal attacks on the owner I was really hoping he was there when I went to visit the restraunt, and he was. He was a great guy. Very personable, family ran business. It wasn't only him there, but his parents as well. I got to asking him about how he got in to BBQing and he never once made it sound like he just done it all on his own. I guess I don't understand the personal attacks on the poor guy, but you made yourself look bad! I understand why your blog was anonymous.

To the anonymous poster on April 4th, I will introduce you to 2 people who got sick from this place's food. And I will introduce you to 5 people who all ate there when I did and thought the food was crap. I stand by what I posted. Which by the way was not anonymousas you state, but you sure are.

Anytime you want to talk, you can email me. westadad@yahoo.com

I love the place. We really dont have much to choose from for BBQ, so I think Phat Jacks is a god send! (ha, btw, Im pregnant). I think the owner is very appreciative of his customers and the help is really nice also. I think the portions of meat are very large and you get your moneys worth. No complaints from me!! I crave the food and will be a customer as long as he is around!!

I'm glad for the folks that have been happy with the food and service there recently, really I am. I have no ill will towards the people that run/own it.

I stand by my original comments though. That day, the food was terrible. With the other BBQ choices in Lincoln still available I won't take the chance of wasting my hard earned money going to Phat Jack's again.

It's my choice (and apparently my loss) to not patronize Phat Jack's. But just like The Roost downtown, there is better elsewhere. You just have to find it.
